Budgeting your remodeling business

Here is the process of an introductory image and spots for Remodeling magazine. The article was about saving money within your contracting business:

They ended up selecting a concept I had used for a previous illo years ago, but I do prefer this image  as it feels more narrative which is something I have been working toward with recent images. Midway through creation, this image was revised to lose the hat, but I prefer this version as I like avoiding a definitive face; I feel this allows readers to subconsciously place themselves as the figure in the image.

I really wish that sketch #2 had been selected (and they said it was close), but the image was deemed to lighthearted for the subject matter. Maybe it will make a return someday; I might use it to explore a new technique.
